House Move Tips: 25 Expert Hacks for a Stress-Free UK Move (2026)

Moving house is regularly ranked one of life’s most stressful events — but it doesn’t have to be. With the right plan, the right boxes and the right people, you can move home smoothly and on budget. Here are our best house move tips, organised week by week, from the experts who do this every single day.

What you’ll learn in this guide

  • How to plan your move with a clear timeline
  • The smartest way to declutter and pack
  • Money-saving tricks most people miss
  • How to survive moving day itself

6–8 Weeks Before: Plan & Declutter

The earlier you start, the calmer the final week will be. Use this window to make the big decisions before the boxes come out.

  • Set a moving budget and decide between a man with a van or a full removals firm. Not sure what it costs? See our man with a van cost guide.
  • Declutter ruthlessly — sell, donate or bin anything you won’t use in the new home. Less stuff means a smaller van and a cheaper move.
  • Book your mover early, especially for month-end or summer dates, which fill up fast.
  • Start a moving folder (digital or paper) for quotes, contracts and important dates.

3–4 Weeks Before: Sort the Admin

This is the boring-but-essential stage. Getting it done early stops nasty surprises later.

  • Notify your council (council tax), utilities, broadband and TV licence of your move date.
  • Set up a Royal Mail redirect so post follows you for the first few months.
  • Update your address with your bank, employer, GP, dentist, insurers and the DVLA.
  • Register your children at their new school if you’re moving catchment areas.
  • Order your packing supplies — see the kit list below.

Your Essential Packing Kit

📦 Boxes

A mix of small (for heavy books) and large (for light, bulky bedding). Double-walled boxes for fragile items.

🧻 Protection

Bubble wrap, packing paper, old towels and blankets to cushion glassware and furniture.

🩹 Tape & labels

Strong parcel tape, a tape gun and bold markers or printed labels for every box.

🔧 Tools

An Allen key set and screwdriver for flat-pack furniture, plus resealable bags for screws.

1–2 Weeks Before: Start Packing

Pack room by room, starting with the things you use least — the loft, garage, spare room and out-of-season clothes.

  • Label every box with its contents and destination room. Colour-code by room for an even faster unload.
  • Keep boxes under 18kg so they’re safe to lift and won’t burst.
  • Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes — never the other way round.
  • Photograph cable setups behind your TV and PC before unplugging.
  • Pack a “first-night” box (see below) and keep it separate.

For loading the van itself, our how to pack a van guide walks you through the correct order step by step.

The First-Night Box (Don’t Skip This)

The single best house-moving tip: pack one box you can find instantly and that gets you through the first night without unpacking everything.

  • Kettle, mugs, tea, coffee and a few snacks
  • Phone chargers and a power strip
  • Toilet roll, soap, toothbrushes and a towel each
  • Bedding and pyjamas for everyone
  • Basic tools, scissors and a torch
  • Any medication, documents and keys

Moving Day: Stay Calm & Organised

With the prep done, moving day should be about execution, not panic.

  • Reserve parking outside both properties so the van can get close.
  • Keep valuables, documents and the first-night box with you, not in the van.
  • Do a final meter-reading at the old home and photograph it.
  • Walk the team through which boxes go in which room at the new place.
  • Keep everyone hydrated and fed — happy movers work faster.
  • Check every cupboard, the loft and the garden shed before you lock up.

Money-Saving Moving Tips

  • Move mid-week and mid-month for the lowest mover rates.
  • Source free boxes from supermarkets, local shops or community groups.
  • Declutter first — you’ll pay to move every box, so fewer is cheaper.
  • Do your own packing rather than paying for a packing service.
  • Use suitcases, bins and laundry baskets you already own instead of buying extra boxes.

House Moving FAQs

How far in advance should I start planning a house move?
Ideally six to eight weeks ahead. That gives you time to declutter, book a reliable mover, sort the admin and pack room by room without a last-minute rush.
What should I pack first when moving house?
Start with the rooms and items you use least — the loft, garage, spare room, books and out-of-season clothes. Leave daily essentials until the final day or two.
What is a first-night box and why do I need one?
It’s a clearly marked box with everything you’ll need for your first evening — kettle, mugs, chargers, toiletries, bedding and basic tools — so you don’t have to unpack everything on day one.
What’s the cheapest day to move house?
Mid-week and mid-month are cheapest, as movers are less busy. Weekends, month-ends and bank holidays are the most in-demand and therefore the priciest.
How heavy should a moving box be?
Keep boxes under about 18kg so they’re safe to lift and won’t break. Pack heavy items like books in small boxes and light, bulky items like bedding in large ones.
